            • Search by a part name. Example: water pump.
            • Be less specific. Example: brake instead of ceramic brake.
            • Remove information such as make, year or model.

Vacuum Pumps Generate Brake Boost Pressure

Any automobile aficionado knows there's plenty of options when buying car parts online, but Stellantis Canada is the best. Vacuum pumps assist brake boosters on diesel engines and some turbocharged engines that don't generate sufficient vacuum naturally. These electric or mechanical pumps create negative pressure that powers your brake assist system. Factory vacuum pumps deliver consistent pressure across all operating conditions. Reliable operation ensures full brake pedal assist regardless of engine load.

How Vacuum Pumps Support Your Brakes

Your vacuum pump draws air from the brake booster reservoir, creating negative pressure that assists pedal effort. Diesel engines lack throttle plates that naturally create vacuum during operation. The pump mounts to the engine block or runs independently as an electric unit. A check valve prevents pressure loss when the engine stops. The system maintains vacuum between 18 and 22 inches of mercury. Brakes feel stiff and require excessive pedal effort when vacuum drops below minimum specifications. The pump cycles on and off based on pressure sensor readings. Mopar vacuum pumps for vehicles like the Ram 2500 diesel and Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel use sealed bearings designed for continuous operation. Some systems include redundant pumps for safety.

            Why Vacuum Pumps Fail

Vacuum pump seals wear out from continuous cycling, reducing output pressure. Electric pumps fail when motors burn out from overheating or electrical faults. Mechanical pumps develop oil leaks at mounting gaskets. Drive couplings break on engine-mounted pumps. Carbon buildup inside the pump restricts airflow. Check valves stick open, allowing vacuum to escape. Wiring connections corrode on electric pumps. Generic aftermarket pumps often lack proper sealing and fail prematurely. Bearing failure causes noise and reduced output. Diaphragms crack in pumps using membrane designs. Contamination from brake fluid vapors damages internal components.

            When Vacuum Pumps Need Replacement

Replace your vacuum pump when brake pedal effort increases noticeably. Hard pedal feel during the first few stops after starting indicates insufficient vacuum generation. Listen for unusual noises from the pump location—grinding or squealing suggests bearing failure. Check for oil leaks around mechanical pump mounting points. Electric pumps that run continuously indicate loss of vacuum pressure. Dashboard warning lights for brake system faults require immediate attention. Test brake assist by pressing the pedal with the engine off—you should feel several assisted stops before pedal becomes stiff. Most vacuum pumps last 80,000 to 120,000 miles. Replace pumps that fail pressure testing during brake service. Genuine Mopar vacuum pumps provide correct pressure output and use materials designed for your specific engine, unlike aftermarket pumps that may not deliver adequate vacuum or fail quickly under sustained use.

From routine maintenance to major overhauls, Stellantis Canada has got you covered.
