Mopar® Exhaust Gaskets FAQs

What Are The Types of Mopar® Exhaust Gaskets

Exhaust gaskets seal the connection points throughout your Jeep or Dodge vehicle's exhaust system. That keeps the noxious fumes contained within, so that your catalytic converter can handle them properly.

There are three primary kinds. They are:

Exhaust Manifold Gasket

This type seals your exhaust manifold to the engine's cylinder head. If you drive a heavy-duty model such as a Ram truck, your V6 or V8 engine features two exhaust manifolds -- so your rig boasts two of these gaskets. No matter how many your vehicle has, this is the gasket that keeps the fumes contained.

Flange Gasket

Also known as a full-face gasket, this kind slots in at other system connection points -- like the place where your exhaust pipe meets the manifold. It's made to the match the outer dimension of the flange it's attached to, and attaches with bolts. While that makes aligning is easier, this gasket does require you to disassemble the joint completely in order to install it.

Ring Gaskets

These gaskets also seal system connection points. However, they sit inside the flange's bolts and around the pipe bore. They offer several advantages: they use less material, so require less cutting, and they can be installed without taking everything apart. However, they're significantly harder to secure into position than a flange gasket.

How Do You Spot a Faulty Exhaust Gasket?

It's not unusual for an exhaust gasket to wear out and allow fumes to leak out of the system. Signs of trouble include a reduction in engine power, overly noisy exhaust, a drop in fuel efficiency, acceleration issues, and the smell of gasoline in the air. If any of these pop up, you'll want to conduct a thorough examination of your full exhaust system to nail down the problem's source.
