Types of Automotive Filters

There are three main types, though one is available for two different purposes. Let's start with that type first, shall we?

Air Filters

there are two air filters installed on your vehicle. The first is the engine air filter, which sits near the air intake under your hood. That allows it to capture pollutants before they can make it to the engine and gum things up. The other air filter is for your cabin HVAC system. Generally, this air filter can be found behind your glove compartment -- though it can also be found under the front cowling on the passenger side of your vehicle. It prevents allergens and irritants from sneaking through the air vents and into the air that you breathe.

Oil Filters

The oil filter removes any impurities from the motor oil that lubricates the many moving engine parts, keeping that oil clean and viscous. Since your combustion engine also produces byproducts when it's running, the filter collects those as well as the oil courses through for a return trip.

Fuel Filters

Your vehicle likely has two fuel filters as well, especially if it's of recent vintage. One sits in the fuel tank, while the other is found further down the fuel line. They remove any impurities left over following the refining process, keeping all of the parts of your fuel system free of clogs and contamination.

When to Replace Your Filters

First, make a regular habit of checking the filters you can access. Those would be the air filters and oil filter, clearly, as your fuel filters are hidden away within the fuel system. If you notice that the fibers are brittle or the filter's clogged, that’s a sure sign that your filter needs replacing. Your owner's manual will spell out your model's specific maintenance and replacement schedule, but in general you can expect to change your engine air filter every 20,000 kilometers, your cabin air filter every 30,000 kilometers, and your oil filter every other time you change your oil.
