Guide To Mopar® Carburetors

Though not nearly as common as they once were, carburetors play an essential role in making sure that your engine is consuming an idealized mixture of air and fuel. Also called carbs, they've been mostly supplanted by the fuel injectors found in modern day Jeep SUVs, RAM pickup trucks, Dodge cars, and Chrysler minivans.

How Mopar® Carburetors Work

In an internal combustion engine, the carburetor is a mechanical part that uses floats, valves, and inlets to route the correct amount of fuel and air to the combustion chamber. The fuel enters through an inlet in the float bowl, with the carburetor regulating the fuel that enters the engine. As air enters the choke, a vacuum draws fuel out of the float bowl and into a secondary barrel. Next, the air and fuel mix together in a primary bowl located just ahead of the throttle valve. When the throttle opens, the mixture is sent to the engine cylinders to deliver the power you need.

How To Spot A Faulty Carburetor

Unfortunately, even the best carburetor can eventually begin to go bad. Signs of trouble include:

  • Weaker acceleration
  • Engine overheating
  • Backfiring engine
  • Difficulty starting your vehicle
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Darker exhaust emissions
